BSFF 2019: 10th-12th August

Bristol Science Film Festival celebrates science through the medium of film. This year the Bristol-based, volunteer-run Festival will take place Saturday 10th – Monday 12th August

For the past several months we invited submissions from amateur and professional filmmakers alike to our short science film competition. The submissions could either be science fact or science fiction, but had to be less than ten minutes long. We received 26 films from around the UK, and further afield, and whittled them down to our final 16!

The shortlisted films have been sent out to our judges, who include Malcolm Love, science communicator and lecturer at the University of the West of England; Andrew Glester, host of The Cosmic Shed podcast; and Gabriela Staniszewska, Bristol-based multi-award-winning filmmaker. We are now counting down the days till we find out who has won!

Join us and some of our shortlisted filmmakers on Sunday 11th August for our first look at the final films at the Bristol Improv Theatre. We’ll also be announcing the winners for our two categories: science fact and science fiction! It’ll be a fun evening of celebration for all the hard work the filmmakers put in to produce thought-provoking, entertaining and original media.

On Saturday 10th August at Bristol Improv Theatre we’ll be tearing apart the science of another Hollywood movie for the third year running in our Bad Science Film night. This year we’ll be flying under the radar with the 2005 action-packed film ‘Stealth’. Join Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx and Josh Lucas as stealth pilots who welcome a fourth member to their team: EDI, a sophisticated AI stealth jet.

Our panellists, including Bristol Bad Film Club mastermind Ti Singh, are ready to defend or destroy the science of Stealth. Will Stealth’s science fly high and be the Bielist or will it crash and burn as another B-List? Expect laughs, a healthy dose of heckling… and some really nerdy arguments!

The final day of the Festival will be Monday 12th August as we gather for a FREE family-friendly screening of our shortlisted films. Pop down to Millennium Square, Bristol, and get comfy on a deckchair in front of Big Screen Bristol for our start time of 7:30 pm. Bring your friends, a thermos and a cosy jumper!

Head to our Festival events diary for more details and links to buy tickets.
